Journeying Together: What it means to be a Catholic in our Parish
If you have ever sat quietly in the pews at Saint Peter’s, St. Paul’s or in our Adoration Chapel, listened to the gentle rhythm of the prayers, or felt a tug in your heart to explore faith a little deeper, you might find yourself wondering: What does it really mean to be a Catholic? And how does someone join this family?
Being a Catholic is not about being perfect, nor is it about memorising a long list of rules. At its heart, being Catholic is a beautiful, lifelong journey of love, community, and peace.
What Being a Catholic Involves
To be a Catholic is to find a spiritual home. It is a way of living that brings purpose, comfort, and joy to everyday life through a few beautiful pillars:
- A Personal Relationship with God: We believe in a God who loves us unconditionally. Being Catholic means taking time to talk to Him in prayer, resting in His presence, and trusting that He is walking beside us through every high and low.
- The Beauty of the Mass: Every day/week, we gather as a parish family to celebrate the Mass. It is a peaceful, sacred time to step away from the busy world, listen to Scripture, and receive strength through the Holy Eucharist (Communion).
- A Loving Community: You never walk alone. Being part of a parish means being surrounded by neighbours who celebrate your joys, support you in your sorrows, and pray with you and for you.
- Living with Kindness: Catholics are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the world. It involves simple, daily acts of charity, looking out for the lonely, and bringing a spirit of gentleness and generosity to our families and workplaces.
How to Become a Catholic in Our Parish
If you are thinking about becoming a Catholic, the most important thing to know is that there is absolutely no rush, and there is no pressure. You are invited to come, see, and explore at a pace that feels completely comfortable for you.
The path to joining the Church is a gentle, welcoming process, and we are right here to guide you every step of the way:
1.1. Start by Attending Mass: Come as you are.
The simplest first step is to just come along to Mass at Saint Peter’s or Saint Paul’s. Sit anywhere you like, soak in the peaceful atmosphere, listen to the sacred music, and experience the warmth of our community. You don’t need to know all the responses or prayers—just come as you are.
2.2. Have a Heart-to-Heart: A friendly chat.
When you feel ready, reach out for a casual, friendly chat. You can speak to any of the priests, deacons, sacristans or parish secretaries at the Parish Office. They can answer your questions, share a cup of tea, and help you understand what the next steps look like for you.
3.3. Join the RCIA Group: A journey of discovery.
Most people become Catholic through a gentle program called the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults). Don’t let the long name fool you—it is simply a relaxed, weekly small group where adults who are curious about the faith meet up to ask questions, learn about Catholic teachings, and share their thoughts in a warm, supportive environment.
4.4. Receive the Sacraments: A beautiful celebration.
If, after learning and praying, you feel in your heart that this is the right path for you, you will be formally welcomed into the Church. This sometimes happens during a beautiful, joyful service at Easter, where you receive the Sacraments of Baptism (if you aren’t already baptized), Confirmation, and First Holy Communion.
The Door is Always Open
Faith is a unique, personal tapestry for everyone. Whether you were baptised in another Christian church years ago, have no religious background at all, or are a lifelong Catholic looking to reconnect, you are so incredibly welcome here.
There is a place reserved just for you in our parish family. Whenever you are ready to take a look, we are waiting with open arms and warm hearts.
