Sacrament of the sick – Housebound

A Prayer of Healing, Strength, and Peace

When we experience illness, weakness, or times of uncertainty, the Church reminds us that we are never alone. Through the Sacrament of the Sick, we receive the loving presence of God and the prayers of the Christian community.
The Priests and Deacons of our parish are always happy to visit and pray with those who are sick, whether at home, in hospital, or in a care setting.
Many people who receive this sacrament speak of feeling comforted, strengthened, and filled with a deeper sense of peace.
If you or someone you love would like to receive the Sacrament of the Sick, please contact one of our priests or the parish office.

What Is the Sacrament of the Sick?

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is a special prayer of the Church for those who are experiencing illness, suffering, or frailty.

Through this sacrament, the priest places his hands in prayer upon the person and anoints them with holy oil. It may be celebrated privately for one person or as part of a gathering for those who are sick.

This sacrament is not only for those who are dying. In the past, it was sometimes misunderstood as the “last rites”, but the Church offers this beautiful sacrament to anyone who needs God’s strength, comfort, and healing.

The Sacrament of the Sick is not a promise that a person will always be physically healed. Rather, it brings the assurance that Christ is close, offering courage, peace, and hope. We pray that God’s healing love may bring strength to body, mind, and spirit.

Who Can Receive the Sacrament?

The Sacrament of the Sick may be received by anyone who needs the Lord’s comfort and strength, including:

  • Those who are seriously ill.
  • Those living with a long-term illness.
  • Those who are elderly or becoming weaker.
  • Those preparing for surgery.
  • Those experiencing a time of particular physical or emotional suffering.

The sacrament may be received more than once, especially if a person’s condition becomes more serious.

The Gift of the Holy Oil

The oil used in this sacrament is blessed olive oil. Oil has always been a sign of comfort, healing, and strength.

The prayer over the oil describes it as:

“Oil intended to ease the sufferings of your people.”

The oil reminds us of Jesus, the Anointed One, who came to bring healing, hope, and salvation. Through this anointing, we are reminded that Christ is close to those who suffer and walks with them in their time of need.

Each year, on Holy Thursday, the Archbishop blesses the holy oils at the Chrism Mass in Newry Cathedral. These oils are then brought back to each parish and used throughout the year in the celebration of the sacraments.

How the Sacrament Is Celebrated

During the celebration of the Sacrament of the Sick, the priest gently anoints the person on the forehead and the palms of the hands with the blessed oil.

As he prays, he says:

“Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you by the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who heals you, save you and raise you up.”

These words remind us that God’s love surrounds us, especially in moments of weakness, illness, and suffering.

A Gentle Invitation

If you or someone close to you is unwell, please do not hesitate to ask for the prayers and support of the Church.

The Sacrament of the Sick is a beautiful gift of God’s compassion—a reminder that, in every moment of life, Christ walks beside us with love, comfort, and hope.
